Project : Oñate University

Oñate University

OÑATE, Spain

One of the emblematic buildings of the city of Oñati in Guipúzcoa is the historical University of Sancti Spiritus. Founded thanks to the initiative of Bishop Rodrigo Mercado of Zuazola, construction on this landmark began in the year of 1540. This was the first University in Basque Country, and it is one of the most valuable Renaissance buildings of the Autonomous Basque Community. In preserving the building, it was necessary to clean the façades. For this, it was necessary to have a good platform, which would facilitate the restoration works and would make it possible to access all the formal variations that the richness of this façade and its inside patio required. BRIO multidirectional scaffolding was used for this purpose, and it sufficiently responded to the needs in question.

BRIO Multidirectional scaffolding was used, with platforms placed every 2 meters, having a width of 0.70 m in the faces of the outside and inside façades and a width of 1 m in the areas surrounding the 4 towers. These were topped off with a 1 m wide platform.
The hole permitting access to the inside cloister opened up, creating two modules supported by diagonals.
The scaffold mounted on the façades of the cloister was also used to protect against falls from on high, which could be caused due to the work necessary to maintain and separate the cover.
